The Scottish Arthroplasty Project

Scottish Joint Registry (SJR)

A pilot Scottish Joint Registry (SJR) has collected data at two Scottish hospital sites, allowing some development of an ISD web-based system. These pilots recorded supplementary arthroplasty information that could be used to enhance what is routinely collected, including detailed information about the types of prosthetic joint implants used and information relating to clinical care during theatre. If funding becomes available, SJR data collection could be rolled out to other sites with the aims of

improving clinical care for hip and knee joint replacement patients through the identification and sharing of best orthopaedic practice in hospitals

increasing awareness of the long-term clinical outcomes of patients receiving hip or knee replacement

determining which are the best performing implants, and identifying any implant which is less successful over the longer term.

A similar scheme is already in operation in England and Wales (http://www.hqip.org.uk/national-joint-registry-njr)
